CN Rail has cancelled the Agawa Canyon Snow Train in Sault Ste. Marie, citing rising operating costs as a result of stagnant passenger demand for the decision.

The company will continue to operate the Agawa Canyon Tour Train during the summer and fall months. The Snow Train typically operated six Saturday excursions each winter.

In a news release, the company said that in spite of its efforts to promote the service, passenger counts haven’t grown, remaining at 1,500 passengers per season.

John Orr, CN’s vice-president of the eastern region, said the company is “committed to Sault tourism and will focus its resources on promoting and growing ridership on the summer and fall tours where we have seen success.”

Ridership on the summer and fall tours has increased by more than 10 per cent over the last two years, which the company attributes to refurbished cars offering a higher level of enjoyment and passenger satisfaction.

“CN is very pleased by the success of the summer and fall excursion trains,” Orr said. “Working with our partner, Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, we will continue to invest in the promotion and delivery of this featured excursion train service.”
