Each year, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters’ (UBC or Carpenters’ Union) hosts the Regional Apprenticeship Showcase, bringing together top UBC apprentices to compete in hands-on skills competitions across a range of trades including carpentry, drywall, floor covering, interior and exterior trim, and scaffolding. Held in three regions - Toronto, Edmonton, and Regina - the showcases provide a unique opportunity for apprentices to test their skills, build their confidence, and represent their Locals in a high-pressure environment. Winners from each regional showcase are selected to compete at the National Apprenticeship Showcase in the fall.

The Northern Regional Showcase, held this year in Regina, saw a strong showing from Northern Ontario, with apprentices from Thunder Bay and Sudbury earning top honours. Keegan Arthur of Local 1669 Thunder Bay placed 1st in carpentry, while Thomas Leindecker of Local 2486 Sudbury earned 2nd place and was recognized with the Excellence in Character Award, sponsored by Milwaukee.

Both Arthur and Leindecker will go on to represent their Locals at the National Apprenticeship Competition (NAC) this September in Edmonton, where they will compete against top apprentices from across Canada.

The showcases are more than just competitions - they are a demonstration of union training and an investment in the future of the skilled trades. Apprentices are judged not only on the quality of their final builds, but also on safety protocols, project planning, and organization. It’s a chance for participants to develop their abilities by completing a complex build that pushes the limits of their skills, while learning alongside – and being evaluated against – some of the most talented apprentices from across the region. Throughout the competition they gain real-time feedback from seasoned industry professionals, and are able to connect and network with contractors, union staff and fellow tradespeople.

For Northern Ontario’s apprentices and Locals, this event is a moment of pride and a testament to the strength of UBC training in the region. As the industry continues to face high demand for skilled workers, events like these play a critical role in developing talent and showcasing the excellence of union-trained professionals.

The UBC congratulates all competitors and looks forward to cheering on the Northern Ontario representatives at the Nationals this fall.
