Algoma University has appointed Sheila Embleton as its new interim president and vice-chancellor, effective July 1.
Embleton takes on the role vacated by Donna Rogers, who was only in the position for four months and whose term ends on June 30.
Calling her a “highly respected academic leader with a distinguished career in Canadian higher education,” Algoma’s board of governors chair, Rob Battisti, said in a statement Embleton is taking the reins at a “pivotal time” for the university as it embarks on its Special Mission, expands its institutional footprint, and strengthens its commitment to cross-cultural learning, equity and student success.
“Throughout her career, Dr. Embleton has demonstrated unwavering dedication to collegial governance, academic excellence, and inclusive leadership,” Battisti said in the statement.
“Her deep experience in supporting Indigenous initiatives, track record of engaging meaningfully with faculty, staff, students, and community partners, and strategic mindset make her the board's confident choice to guide the institution through this period of transition and renewal.”
Embleton was most recently the interim president and vice-chancellor at Laurentian University in Sudbury.
She holds a PhD in linguistics from the University of Toronto, and is professor emerita at York University, where she served in numerous senior leadership roles, including vice-president academic and provost.
Additionally, Embleton is a distinguished research professor emerita, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, president of the RSC Academy of the Arts and Humanities, and has served on numerous national and international boards. She has earned recognition for her leadership in internationalization, gender equity, and Indigenous engagement.
