According to Statistics Canada, travel through Canadian airports across the country continues to progress back to pre-pandemic levels. In April of this year, 4.5 million passengers passed through pre-board security screening at various checkpoints operated at Canada’s eight largest airports. That’s a 3.6 percent increase over the same time last year and 1.9 percent higher than the pre-COVD-19 pandemic level in 2019.
Operationally, both aircraft and passenger movements through Sioux Lookout Municipal Airport have rebounded significantly since the pandemic with numbers getting ever closer to full recovery. That’s good news for both passengers and airlines at the regional airport, which facilitates air transportation services for the local community and surrounding areas.
In conjunction with the increase in air travel, airport operators are working to improve the amenities and systems that help the airport and the airlines better serve travellers. For example, starting on June 12th, a portion of the existing departure area will become a secure hold room to better accommodate passenger screening. This improvement in security means that travellers will be screened prior to entering the hold room. This will improve boarding times and help airlines deliver better on-time performance.
“In partnership with the airlines, these additional security measures are meant to ensure safe and efficient travel for all passengers,” said Ben Hancharuk, Airport Manager at Sioux Lookout Municipal Airport.
While it may take a short period of time for airport staff to fine-tune the new check-in process, future passengers can be thankful for the new improvements at Sioux Lookout, which are designed to increase customer satisfaction and reduce any potential frustration often associated with air travel. On the other hand, pro-active passengers can also play a role in ensuring a smooth air travel experience by checking with their airline to confirm check-in times and the procedures used to on-board passengers.
Once they’re through the security checkpoint, passengers at Sioux Lookout can still enjoy access to food and beverage services provided by YXL Convenience. YXL Convenience offers both grab and go choices post security as well as full restaurant services pre security.
The airport is also home to the Indigenous Clothing and Gifts kiosk, which offers a variety of unique and interesting products and creations for passengers looking for last minute items.
Sioux Lookout Municipal Airport will continue to accommodate flights from a variety of air travel providers. Daily scheduled air carrier service is provided by North Star Air, Wasaya Airways and Perimeter Aviation. On site charter services are provided by SkyCare. The airport also receives a number of itinerant charter flights provided by Thunder Air, Air Bravo, and Superior Airways.
