Trades camps for tweens are touring the North again this summer, with the goal of inspiring a new generation to enter trades careers.

Hosted by Skills Ontario, the camps are open to students in Grades 7 to 9. Participants take part in hands-on activities relevant to the skilled trades, helping them develop communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

“Learning doesn’t end over the summer, and our trades and tech camps are the perfect opportunity for youth to try new things, get information about career opportunities in the skilled trades, and discover their passion,” Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario, said in a news release.

“These camps are helping to change lives and inspire leaders through skilled trades and technologies.”

More than 30 of the week-long camps will take place in 22 different locations across Ontario, including five in the North. Camps are held in conjunction with postsecondary institutions in each area.

Northern Ontario dates and locations include:

  • July 7-11: Collège Boréal (FRENCH), Sudbury
  • July 14-19: Confederation College, Thunder Bay
  • July 21-25: Cambrian College, Sudbury
  • July 28-Aug. 1: Sault College, Sault Ste. Marie
  • Aug. 18-22: Northern College, Timmins

Skills Ontario provides educational programming designed to encourage more youth to explore skilled trades and technologies. The organziation has been in operation since 1989.
