"We’re satisfied this will send an adequate message of deterrence to the community,” Ministry of Labour lawyer Bruce Arnott said of the joint submission to the court in Thunder Bay.

Worker Robert Elliot was hospitalized with a broken hip and other injuries and was off work for 12 weeks as a result of an accident at the mine.

Placer Dome will be back in Thunder Bay court May 22 to set a trial date on another matter. The company and two supervisors are charged in the Nov. 22, 2000 death of one worker and the injury of another.

Jerome Burns of Elliot Lake died at the Musselwhite mine when a tire on a 30-tonne rock hauler separated from the rim.
