When Lynn Bulloch started her career as a TV reporter she never imagined she would later transition to public relations and marketing.

“Changing my career when I did, in my early 30s, I was concerned,” she said. “Would I have to start at the bottom?”

She worked for CTV in London for about seven years, but later decided to move back to her hometown: Sudbury.

After her return, she accepted a public relations job with Cambrian College.

Bulloch is now the marketing manager at Cambrian and says could not be happier with the decisions that brought her to that point in her career.

Sudbury's English-language community college offered Bulloch the excitement and constant change she got out of journalism, but also gave her stability and a solid path for future career development.

Self improvement

Cambrian College offers its full-time staff the same opportunities it extends to its students: chances to better their lives through education.

Each full-time employee can enrol in any class at the college for only $20.

Staff can also apply for an education loan plan to improve their skills. Bulloch has enrolled in a French as a second language class, at Cambrian's sister college, Collège Boréal, where she can get reimbursed for up to 80 per cent of her tuition costs.

Cambrian's education benefits extend to full-time employees' spouses and dependents as well. The college covers tuition fees for both groups.

“It really shows the commitment to lifelong learning,” said Alison De Luisa, Cambrian's executive director of human resources.

Career advancement

When Bulloch transitioned to Cambrian from the hustle and bustle of TV journalism she worried her new workplace might turn out to be too static for her tastes.

But she soon found out that working at Cambrian would offer her exciting new challenges to tackle each day.

“As a person who craves change, I love it,” she said. “There's change happening all the time.”

Bulloch started at Cambrian as a communications officer and was able to advance to the position of marketing manager.

To keep up with the latest technology and communication tools, her title will soon change again to digital marketing manager.

Bulloch said the college also celebrates career milestones, both for new employees and long-serving staff.

When Cambrian's previous president, Peter Lawlor, stepped down suddenly after less than a year in office, Bulloch said it was an opportunity for staff to step up to the plate and accept greater responsibility.

De Luisa agrees. “During that transition we never lost our focus,” she said.

Now with a new president in place, Bill Best, Cambrian is about to embark a series of consultations with the community to develop a new strategic plan.

It takes a village

Unlike most employers, Bulloch said, Cambrian has all the amenities one could find in a small town. The campus has a number of restaurants, including a Tim Hortons and Mr. Sub, and a cafeteria.

The campus is also picturesque, and Bulloch said she fooled her friends into thinking she was on vacation when she posted a photo of herself on campus to Facebook her first year.

Health and wellness is also a big priority at the college, said De Luisa.

The college has a wellness committee, and staff have access to a fully stocked gym, and can take part in a number of fitness classes ranging from yoga to Pilates.

“When you join Cambrian, it's not just an employer, it's a community,” De Luisa said.
