Best Places to Work in Northern Ontario: TIME Ltd.

Haileybury company treats employees like family

You may not be able to choose your relatives, but luckily you can choose an employer that treats you at least as well — or maybe better — than family.

That’s how many employees describe the social and work environment at TIME Ltd. (Temiskaming Industrial Mining Equipment), a manufacturer and global distributor of products to the mining, drilling and industrial sectors, based in Haileybury.

Not long after Paul Aquino joined TIME as its marketing coordinator four years ago, his father became very sick.

“Sometimes I would have to leave work to see him if something was going on. My dad was worried because I was missing time at work.”

But as far as his employers were concerned, there was no question that he needed to be with his dad when he was sick. He lost his father a year and a half ago but the support he received from management and co-workers was invaluable.

“That makes me want to help the company and be there for someone else.”

Aquino is certainly not the only TIME employee who feels that way. Many of his colleagues have told him that they too appreciate the camaraderie and support from management and staff in every department. In fact, three employees have worked at the company for over 35 years.

One factor that contributes to the family-oriented work environment is the culture of respect that TIME’s leadership has fostered, something Aquino heard from others.

“What really stood out to me is that everyone employed at TIME Ltd. is treated with an enormous amount of respect. The employers truly care about their employees and their well-being, and unfortunately, this is not the case for most businesses.”

“Instead of yelling at employees when they don’t do things properly, (TIME) management try to explain the right way of doing things and find a way to make things work.

“The employer trusts that employees will complete their tasks and do not need to be micro-managed.”

Other draws include the chance to work with some of the latest equipment and technology, and grow with the company. “They always look to promote from within,” said Aquino.

A fixture of the mining supply industry since the 1970s, TIME’s Haileybury location houses its modern distribution warehouse, fabrication, and manufacturing shop. The company doubled the size of the shop in 2014 with a 21,000-square-foot expansion.

With branch warehouses and distribution centres in Sudbury, Timmins, Val d’Or, and Saskatoon, TIME employs around 50 people.

“I enjoy the variety of work in my day-to-day responsibilities,” said Aquino. “I get to wear many hats in any given day. The variety and challenge this poses is what keeps me on my game.

“I enjoy being part of an amazing team of like-minded individuals that are motivated and driven to succeed. Every day I see examples of teamwork at its best, people working together to get the task done right and on time. There is definitely a camaraderie I haven’t felt anywhere else.”
