Experience Real Living is the new marketing strategy of the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) of Wawa.

Located 225 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Marie, the community of 2,900 is looking for people who appreciate the lifestyle of working in a close-knit community overlooking the scenic shores of Lake Superior.

With job openings in mining, forestry, and health services, the EDC is focusing on attracting new residents and entrepreneurs who might want to start or purchase a business.

Many opportunities exist for real entrepreneurs in the service industry and the growing forestry and mining sectors. A list of Wawa businesses for sale can be found at www.edcwawa.ca/available-land.

The community has an abundance of available industrial properties and vacant buildings that can be tailored to fit any need. A variety of shovel-ready property is available including Crown land, private land and serviced lots.

New local developments include Rentech, a biomass pellet producer, which is set to export product to Europe by year’s end. Gold mining operators like Wesdome and Richmont continue to find new areas of mineralization, and a new player, Argonaut-Prodigy, is in the process of developing a gold mine, said Maury O’Neill, Wawa’s economic development director.

Companies like J. Provost Contracting are expanding and hiring, and NextBridge has been contracted to build a major regional transmission line, the East-West tie, that’s sure to bring economic benefits to Wawa.

Tourism opportunities abound for any entrepreneur and just a few minutes from the iconic Wawa Goose attraction on the Trans-Canada Highway, residents enjoy a fantastically clean lake and a series of walking trails. The Sandy Beach Eco-Park hosts a storytelling pavilion where visitors can learn about the First Nation people who first settled the area, famous artists and composers such as the Group of Seven and Glenn Gould who drew inspiration from their time on the shores of Superior.

With fully bilingual schools, cheap housing prices, new medical and great recreational facilities, and fantastic beaches, Wawa provides newcomers with an opportunity to live and work in a safe town, away from the hustle and bustle of city living, said O’Neill.

“Wawa is a beautiful place to live with lots of opportunity.”
