A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to fund a new history book about the Town of Cobalt — and raise the community's profile in the process.

Cobalt: Canada’s Forgotten Silver Boom Town, written by historian and professor Dr. Douglas Baldwin, is a 380-page, richly illustrated historical account of the Town of Cobalt, which experienced a silver-mining rush in the early 1900s and led the way for further mineral exploration in Northern Ontario.

All profits from the sale of the book will go to the Historic Cobalt Legacy Fund, which supports local organizations that help preserve the area’s heritage.

Nicole Guertin and Jocelyn Blais, who organized the crowdfunding campaign, have restored a number of historical homes in the Haileybury era through their business, Presidents’ Suites, and have worked tirelessly over the last decade promoting the mining legacy of the Temiskaming area.

Guertin believes the significance of Cobalt’s legacy in Northern Ontario — and the country — can’t be overstated.

“We need to raise Cobalt’s historical profile and educate Canadians about the region’s importance to the nation’s financial, economic, and social development,” Guertin said in a statement.

“Cobalt was more important than the Klondike Gold Rush, but few people even know of our existence. I hope that Cobalt: Canada’s Forgotten Silver Boom Town will raise our profile throughout the country.”

Launched on Nov. 26 on the crowdfunding platform Fundrazr.com, the 40-day campaign will run until Jan. 4, 2016.
