Sagamok Development Corporation (SDC) has received provincial funding to help with the ongoing upgrade and expansion of Ritchie Falls Resort.

The organization, an economic development initiative of the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation, received $500,000 from FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program.

Upgrades at Ritchie Falls will include upgraded hydro and increased capacity at the hunting and fishing lodge, as well as the construction of three new cabins and a conference centre, which will increase the facility’s capacity from 60 to 80.

The lodge, which Sagamok acquired in 2014, has been a popular site for fishing and hunting enthusiasts, and now the community is looking to expand its offerings as a conference facility.

“We are thankful for this support from the Government of Canada,” said Sagamok Chief Paul Eshkakogan in a release.

“This project will allow us to maximize growth opportunities that will benefit the entire community and provide crucial employment to many local residents. It will also help us welcome new visitors and promote Aboriginal culture and education.”
