SUDBURY — March 13, 2023: To meet the demand for more skilled employees in the financial services industry, Cambrian College is offering a new program, starting this September.

Cambrian’s two-year business-finance diploma program will prepare graduates for working in different segments of the financial services sector such as banking, mortgages, insurance (non-life), wealth management, and financial planning.

It is the first program of its kind in northern Ontario.

“This is a unique program to the region and one that was developed with significant input from various stakeholders,” says Parvinder Arora, dean of Cambrian’s School of Business. “We heard from community partners, industry experts and members of our program advisory committees (PACs) working in the financial sector who strongly recommended this kind of program, indicating there is a need for this skill set.”

The first year of business-finance contains a common curriculum with Cambrian’s other two-year business diploma programs: general business, business-accounting, and business-hospitality. The second year of the program focuses on various aspects of financial services including financial planning, investing, mortgages, and general insurance.

This program will be delivered in a flexible manner. Students have the choice to study on campus, virtually via web conferencing, fully online, or a combination thereof.

The program will also help the students prepare for certification in the field of financial planning.

“There continues to be a shortage of specialists in the financial services sector when the job outlook is likely to be quite strong for the foreseeable future,” says Milton Lessis, senior consultant at IG Wealth Management, Sudbury, and an alumnus of Cambrian College. “Cambrian College’s new business-finance program will help close that gap between the demand and supply of skilled workforce in this sector.”

Classes in the business-finance program start this September. For more information and to apply, visit www.cambriancollege.ca/programs/business-finance.
