The City of Sault Ste. Marie is forging ahead to buy and develop two tracts of land from Algoma Steel for use as a heavy industrial park.

Much of the money for the $3.36-million project is expected to come from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. The city is committing $420,000 from their industrial land reserve fund, with FedNor matching funds.

One 79-acre parcel is located east of Leigh's Bay Road in the city's west end. It is zoned for heavy industrial use. The other 66-acre property on Yates Avenue is zoned for medium and heavy industry.

The city is further conducting engineering and environmental work on a 592-acre industrial site owned by the Ontario Realty Corp. on Black Road.
