The 2012 CARHA World Cup hockey tournament hosted in Sault Ste. Marie last year is being recognized by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance.

The event is one of three finalists vying for the title of Canadian Sport Event of the Year, which recognizes sporting events that have made outstanding contributions to the success of the sport tourism industry across the country.

The weeklong event drew 120 teams from all over the world, generating an economic impact of $13.3 million in the community. Other finalists include the Tim Hortons Brier and 100th Grey Cup Festival.

“To be put on the same pedestal with these two Canadian staple events speaks volumes to the outstanding job of the 2012 CARHA World Cup host organizing committee,” Sault Mayor Debbie Amaroso said in a statement. “They went above and beyond and pulled out all the stops to make the weeklong event special for the participants and nothing short of a complete success.”

The winner of the Canadian Sport Event of the Year will be announced at the CSTA’s PRESTIGE Awards on April 10 in Ottawa. This year, there were 41 nominations for six award categories.
