Passenger traffic at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport reached record levels in December.

The airport’s development corporation announced on Jan. 8 that 18,576 passengers flew in and out of the airport in December 2017, which marks a 3.23 per cent increase over December 2016.

It also marks the best December traffic in the history of the airport.

The Sault Ste. Marie Airport continues to be served daily by Air Canada Express, Bearskin Airlines, and Porter Airlines.

As of Dec. 22, Sunwing Airlines returned with their seasonal service to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This year, the seasonal service is scheduled to run until April 2018, with the last departure to the sunny south on April 13 and the last return to the Sault on April 20.

For the year 2017, the airport saw a 0.57 per cent increase in passenger levels, from 211,619 in 2016 to 212,831 in 2017.

During 2017, the airport saw two new records for overall passenger levels in a single month with August setting a record at 20,055, only to be broken again in October at 20,667. There were six months in the year, including August and October, that set records for that month.

“The SSMADC is pleased to see a continuing increase in passenger levels. The airlines continue to modify schedules in order to provide customers the most convenient travel times,” noted Terry Bos, president and CEO of the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corp.

“Sunwing has returned for another winter season, and there has been a noticeable increase in the number of American licence plates parking at the airport which is a promising development.”
