Nipissing University has appointed Dr. Kevin Wamsley as its new president and vice-chancellor.
The North Bay school said Wamsley would begin his five-year term on Aug. 1.
He's currently the academic vice-president and provost of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
“Dr. Wamsley’s proven leadership qualities and extensive experience as both an academic and administrator will be invaluable as Nipissing enters this next exciting phase in its growth,” Marianne Berube, chair of Nipissing's board of governors, said in a May 19 news release.
“We look forward to working with Dr. Wamsley to continue to build on Nipissing’s strengths and strategic priorities in the areas of student experience, research and academic excellence.”

A world-renowned expert and historian on the Olympic Games, Wamsley previously served as professor, associate dean, acting dean, and director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies at Western University.
Prior to that he was a professor and associate dean at the University of Calgary.
“I look forward to joining the Lakers community, building connections with the broader community, and working collaboratively to enhance Nipissing’s reputation as a leading primarily undergraduate university with national prominence,” Wamsley said in the release.
Wamsley replaces Mike DeGagné, who announced his departure in March 2020.
Cheryl Sutton has been filling in on an interim basis since last July. She'll now return to her position as vice-president of finance and administration.
