Northern Ontario students have begun their training as part of the inaugural cohort of the Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph.

Announced in 2023, the program is a joint effort of the University of Guelph and Lakehead University and is the first expansion of the program in 30 years. It aims to address a shortage of veterinary care in Northern Ontario.

During the first two cohorts, students will complete the full four years in Guelph while construction is underway on a new veterinary medicine facility at Lakehead, estimated to be complete in 2027.

Once finished, students with future cohorts will study in Thunder Bay at Lakehead for the first two years of the program, followed by two years at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph. Graduates will receive a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree from the University of Guelph.

The goal is for graduates to return to their home communities to bolster veterinary care in underserviced regions.

“These students bring deep ties to Northern Ontario, a passion for service, and a commitment to improving animal health and welfare,” Dr. Jeff Wichtel, dean of the Ontario Veterinary College, said in a University of Guelph news release.

“We’re proud to support their journey and to be part of a long-term solution that strengthens veterinary capacity across the province.”

Among the first cohort are students from Timmins, Corbeil, Thunder Bay and Sudbury.

They will engage in experiential learning, collaborate with local veterinarians and complete specialized coursework tailored to northern practice.

The program officially kicks off during a Professional Welcome Ceremony on Sept. 7, during which each student will receive a blue lab coat and stethoscope marking the start of their training.
