Sudbury continues to work towards establishing this municipality as a key player in the supply chain for the battery electric vehicle (BEV) industry.

For the third year in a row, Sudbury is hosting the annual BEV In-Depth: Mines to Mobility Conference, which is to take place on May 29-30, 2024 at Cambrian College.

"As automotive manufacturers move to fully electric vehicles by 2040, this event brings together leaders from across Canada to focus on the entire BEV supply chain," said a conference news release.

"From mines to mobility and where North meets South, this event will continue to forge relationships between leaders in mining, automotive, battery, mineral processing, chemical processing, transportation, energy, government, and more."

The event will kick off with a dinner on May 29 followed by the all-day conference of speakers, panel forums and workshops on May 30. Speakers will include Ontario Mines Minister George Pirie, Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre and several industry leaders representing the automotive, battery manufacture and mining industries.

Registration for the event is available now online.

Along with being one of the world’s largest nickel mining municipalities, the mining supply sector in Sudbury and Northeastern Ontario has ramped up in recent years in a bid to meet the critical mineral demand for automotive and mining battery manufacturing.

In addition to that Cambrian College has responded with courses in battery electric vehicle maintenance technician course, industrial electrical engineering technology and mining engineering technology.

As at past conferences, there will be several battery electric vehicles on display from both the automotive and mining industries, said the organizers. The public exhibits are to be open to conference delegates and the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in parking lot 15 at Cambrian College. Consumer electric vehicle test drives are free of charge for conference delegates and the public.
