Glencore's Kidd mine and mill operations in Timmins has won the President’s Award from Workplace Safety North (WSN).
The award was announced Sept. 19 in North Bay at the occupational safety organization's annual general meeting and awards dinner.
The company operation was honoured for its contribution to building safe and healthy workplaces in Ontario.
“Everyone’s really proud of the win,” says Tom Semadeni, Kidd general manager. “It’s really icing on the cake because earlier this year we won the John T. Ryan national safety trophy for the best safety performance for a Canadian metal mine. So it’s further reinforcement that we’re on the right track.”
In operation since 1966, Kidd is the world’s deepest base metal mine, which Semadeni said creates a variety of challenges in logistics and supervision in overseeing 1,200 miners and contractors working at two sites separated by 30 kilometres.
A second President's Award was handed out to Kruger Packaging, Bramption Division in the paper, printing and converting sector.
“There is a need to recognize the efforts of workplaces that choose to make safety a priority. Our members deserve special recognition when they demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring that every worker goes home safe and healthy,” says WSN CEO Candys Ballanger-Michaud.
