The inquest dates have been set for next month’s investigation into the death of a Sudbury-based mining contractor who died five years ago at a mine, northwest of Thunder Bay.
Edouard Gallant of SCR Mining and Tunnelling reportedly died of injuries sustained in a run of muck incident at the Lac des Iles Mine, northwest of the city, on May, 27, 2020.
Gallant, a New Brunswick native, was 64 at the time of the accident, and was working for SCR Mining and Tunnelling of Sudbury.
Dr. Kevin Miller, the regional supervising coroner in Thunder Bay, announced that the inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, 2025.
The inquest is expected to last six days and hear from approximately 10 witnesses.
Dr. Jennifer Tang will be the presiding officer and Jai Dhar will be the inquest counsel. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Gallant’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

Impala Canada was fined a total of $350,000 in 2023 for this fatality and another incident in 2020 that critically injured a worker at the mine.
The Lac des Iles Mine is set to close in May 2026. Impala is blaming it on lagging palladium prices.
