Well-known mining executive Mark Cutifani has been recognized for his contributions to the global mineral extraction industry.
Cutifani, who currently serves as chair of the Energy Transition Metals Board with Vale's Base Metals division, was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
His name was included on the 2024 King’s New Year’s Honours list, released at the end of December, which recognizes the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK.
Cutifani was previously chief operating officer at CVRD INCO (now Vale), but left in 2007 to become CEO at AngloGold Ashanti. He later became CEO at Anglo American, where he remained until spring 2022.
During his time in Sudbury, Cutifani was lauded for his community-building efforts following an acrimonious three-month strike by mine workers. The mining exec was commended for engaging workers and community members to repair the relationship that had been damaged during the labour dispute.
Australian by birth, Cutifani holds a mining engineering degree from the University of Wollongong, and has earned a host of accolades and awards through his 40-year career.
That includes an honorary Doctor of Laws, awarded by Laurentian University in Sudbury in 2016, and the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, from Rotary Group for services to the community, in Sudbury in 2006.
