The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is taking public comments on a potential gold open pit in the Wawa area of northeastern Ontario.

The federal agency must decided whether a federal environmental assessment is required for the Magino project.

Prodigy Gold, a subsidiary of Argonaut Gold, wants to mine gold from an open pit on the site of an former underground gold mine over a seven to eight-year span.

The company's proposal would include construction, operation and eventual decommissioning of the pit and a processing mill.

The proposed mine site would include a tailings and waste rock pile, warehouse, processing plant, ore crushing operation, and possibly an acid waste generating stockpile.

Ore production is pegged at 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes per day.

The Magino Gold Project is 40 km northeast of Wawa, near the town of Dubreuilville.

Deadline for written comments is Aug. 8 at magino@ceaa-acee.gc.ca.
