A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Newmont's Musselwhite Mine north of Thunder Bay, after at least one individual tested positive for the virus.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Wednesday said there are several other people who are considered preliminary positive based on rapid testing results.

Confirmation of those tests is being completed and close contacts have been identified and are currently isolating. The health unit said it is working with mine management to identify the exposure risk of other workers and any contacts outside of the mine site, located 480 kilometres from Thunder Bay.

The mine experienced another outbreak in February and has taken measures to reduce the spread of the virus.
