Xstrata Nickel has provided funding to Sudbury-area elementary schools to clean up their schoolyards.
The nickel miner is the major sponsor of Sudbury’s Ugliest Schoolyard Contest, through which local schools can nominate their schoolyard for a makeover. This year’s winner, Ecole St. Joseph, receives a cash donation from Xstrata Nickel, as well as supplies and expert advice from local businesses to transform its schoolyard into a greener and healthier outdoor environment
Xstrata Nickel also provided prizes to the three runners-up—Chelmsford Public School, Ecole Secondaire Hanmer and Ernie Checkeris Public School—which will receive financial assistance to create schoolyard green spaces.
Since 2005, the Ugliest Schoolyard Contest and its sponsors have helped 26 Sudbury schools create greener and healthier schoolyards. Project planning has begun at this year’s winning schools, and the schoolyard transformations will take place this fall.
