The Algoma Workforce Investment Committee (AWIC) has created a new sponsorship program that provides up to $500 to events or activities that advance labour market development.
“The directors of the AWIC are convinced there is a need to help external projects that fit with the mandate of AWIC,” board chair Dan Friyia said in a news release. “I am very pleased that we are committing sponsorship dollars to support these important projects.”
Eligible projects include economic development programs that create jobs, career fairs, labour market research, business/employer outreach and the promotion of apprenticeships. Priority will be given to projects that target First Nations, students and youth, persons with disabilities, older workers, displaced workers and new immigrants.
The AWIC has already awarded sponsorship to the Manitoulin Youth Business Camp, which is geared to youth aged nine to 13 who are interested in starting a business. Over five days, campers will decide what kind of business they are interested in, develop a product and operate their business for one day.
The AWIC is a community-based planning committee that aims to engage communities in a local labour market and planning process that will lead to co-operative efforts to find local solutions to local labour market issues.
