The Elementa Group has landed a five-year contract with the City of Sault Ste. Marie to convert household garbage in its landfill into syngas.
It will allow the green energy company to seek financing to build a $30 million plant. The company, formerly known as Enquest Power, still needs Ministry of Environment operating approvals.
The city stands to make $5 million in royalties once the plant is operating. For five years, Elementa has been working on a waste-to-energy gasification technology to produce syngas in the Sault. The company has been operating a 2,000-square -foot pilot plant at the city's landfill site to prove up the technology and showcase it to visiting delegations.
Their gasification process uses indirect heating that involves no combustion. Organic matter, like curbside garbage, is fed into the kiln and heated on the outside up to 900 C.
The waste-to-energy technology has been closely monitored by the Ontario Ministry of Environment.
