A First Nation value-added forestry company has started construction of a wood processing facility in northwestern Ontario.
Two Feather Forest Products LP announced Aug. 13 it is ready to begin site development and preparatory work at the Nungesser Road Industrial Park in Red Lake.
It will be the anchor tenant of the park and officials are saying an additional 40 tenants are expect to locate their business at the site.
The company's location will have a saw mill line with related kiln drying, sorting, chipping and biomass operations.
Construction and site development will create an estimated 200 jobs in the region.
Two Feathers is partnership involving Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation, Pikangikum First Nation, Eagle Lake First Nation and Finland's Wood Tech Group Canada.
“We're ready to get to work on this exciting new forestry venture in Red Lake,” said Two Feathers president Terry Favelle in a statement. “This project reflects the realities of today's forestry sector. It is about about promoting job creation and long-term economic development to improve the quality of life in our Northern communities.”
Red Lake Mayor Phil Vinet said the arrival of Two Feathers is a “tremendous development” for the community.
“There has been a significant amount of anticipation surrounding the development of this new wood processing facility; namely due to the new employment and training potential that it brings.”
