The city’s two major mining houses have committed a combined total of $2.25 million to support ecological recover at the City of Greater Sudbury through the municipality’s new Biodiversity Action Plan.

The plan, which emerged from risks identified in the controversial Sudbury Soils Study, will be supported by Vale Inco to the tune of $1.25 million, as well as $1 million from Xstrata.

Specific actions include accelerated liming, planting and regreening as well as reclamation-related research projects and hosting a Biodiversity Forum in 2010.

The move will not affect the budgets of the miners’ existing green-focused activities, such as Vale Inco’s $4.5-million slag heap regreening or site restoration work being done by Xstrata.
