Vale Inco to be spared federal wrath over Canadian cuts

Vale Inco's decision to chop 423 Canadian jobs and shut down its Sudbury operations for eight weeks, as announced in March 2009, won't result in any action from the federal government.

Vale Inco's decision to chop 423 Canadian jobs and shut down its Sudbury operations for eight weeks, as announced in March 2009, won't result in any action from the federal government.

Many politicians and labor leaders have openly wondered whether the cuts were in violation of Vale's commitment to no layoffs for three years, as set out in an agreement signed during the purchase of Inco in 2006.

However, speaking to reporters in Parliament, federal Industry Minister Tony Clement said the company has spread shutdowns throughout its global operations, and therefore was not targeting Canada.

"One of the things I look for is, is there an equality of pain around the world in these international enterprises," said Clement, according to Reuters.
