U.S. company nets Vale smelter contract

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. is the successful bidder for the contract to design and supply a new sulfuric acid plant for the Vale's Sudbury smelter.

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. is the successful bidder for the contract to design and supply a new sulfuric acid plant for the Vale's Sudbury smelter.

The $55-million project is part of Vale's Clean Atmosphere Emissions Reduction (AER) project, which is designed to cut sulfur dioxide emissions at the Sudbury site by more than 70 per cent from current levels.

Jacobs' contract includes the design of the complete sulfuric acid plant contact section and the supply of all the equipment and some materials. The plant features Jacobs' proprietary equipment throughout, the bulk of which is expected to be manufactured at Jacob's facility in Pickering.

Jacobs was earlier contracted to modernize Vale's exisitng acid plant in 2002, and has provided proprietary equipment since hte original acid plant was built in the 1990s.
