Struggling greenhouse growers in Ontario received a present from the McGuinty government with the Nov. 9 announcement of a $6 million order for 13.5 million tree seedlings.
Under a one-year supplemental forest renewal program, the seedlings will be purchased and planted on 6,700 hectares next spring and summer. The plant will focus on areas damaged by fire and other natural disturbances.
The government said it will create up to 70 jobs in seedling production this winter and 420 jobs in site preparation and planting.
The program will be administered by the Forestry Futures Trust Committee which will issue a call for proposals from Sustainable Forest Licence holders and managers of Crown units. The deadline is Nov. 27.
