Proponents behind Thunder Bay's waterfront makeover at Marina Park are gushing over almost $30 million in announced federal and provincial funding for the first phase of the proposed Prince Arthur's Landing project.

Proponents behind Thunder Bay's waterfront makeover at Marina Park are gushing over almost $30 million in announced federal and provincial funding for the first phase of the proposed Prince Arthur's Landing project.

The money is coming out of the federal-provincial Building Canada Fund. Some excavation work could start later this summer or early fall as city staff prepare tender packages for water and sewer upgrades at the bottom of Red River Road. There will also work done for a garden pavilion, skating rink and splash pad. Next stage fund is being pursued by the city to enlarge the marina with 300 slips.

Plans call for a separate private $65 million investment led by Laureate Developments of Winnipeg for a hotel and condominium complex.

Local opponents of the project recently dropped their appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board.
