At a union rally held Sept. 19, United Steelworkers international president Leo Gerard told a crowd of at least 2,500 supporters to avoid shopping at local businesses that fail to display signs printed by the union, which read “Sudbury supports working families.”
Gerard told the audience the message is “you're either with us or against us” in the United Steelworkers' ongoing fight with Vale Inco.
Sudbury Chamber of Commerce president Debbie Nicholson has told media that local businesses are not expected to get involved.
Workers have been on strike since June after union members refused to accept the company's latest contract offer, which included a cap on the nickel bonus and changes to the pension plan.
