Risto Laamanen, one of Sudbury's most prominent businessmen and community leaders, died suddenly Tuesday after a cerebral hemorrhage, said a close friend.
Laamanen, 61, was the founder of Wallbridge Mining Company Ltd. and Laamanen Construction. He will be sorely missed, said Science North CEO Jim Marchbank.
“Everyone here is shocked and saddened,” he said. “Just in the last couple of weeks we've had two big events that he was prominent at … he was in good humour and in good health.”
Laamanen worked actively in the Sudbury community, serving on Cambrian College's board of governors for years, where he was founding chairperson of the Cambrian Foundation, the college's fundraising arm. He also helped lead fundraising efforts for Science North and Dynamic Earth, and spearheaded the IMAX theatre addition and its first large format film production.
As well, Laamanen was on the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation's board of directors.
