The Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce is voicing its support for a plan to redevelop industrial land in the city, suggesting the city should shoulder the full cost of the project.
In advance of a May 29 council vote on the matter, the chamber released a statement urging city council to address the lack of water and sewer infrastructure at the Elisabella and Lapointe industrial park, located in the northeast end of the city.
“This area is one of several important business parks in our city, and is home to approximately 40 businesses, many of which provide industrial and manufacturing services that have been located in the area for decades,” said Mark Weiman, chair of the GSCC, in a news release.
“Regrettably, circumstances exist whereby water and wastewater services in the area threaten the safety of citizens and are restricting the profitability and growth of businesses. Council must accept responsibility to ensure infrastructure and services are at a level that meets current standards.”
Weiman said the “seriousness of the situation and legal responsibility demands that an immediate resolution be found.”
Redevelopment of the area could result in the creation of more than 500 jobs and provide opportunities for economic development, Weiman added.
However, he suggested that this case should not set a precedent; instead each situation should be assessed based on its own issues.
