Sudbury celebrating Mining Week

Sudbury Mining Week 2012 will take place from April 28 to May 5 under the theme Mining and Technology for Future Generations.

Sudbury Mining Week 2012 will take place from April 28 to May 5 under the theme Mining and Technology for Future Generations.

This is the 18th year for the annual event, which aims to promote mining and its importance to the economy and culture of Northern Ontario, as well as teach area youth about the broad range of mining-related careers available in the mining, service and supply sectors.

A series of activities will take place throughout the week, including a career fair, the Mining Games, a teaching workshop for elementary school teachers, a business luncheon featuring Ray Mantha, assistant deputy minister of the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, and a popsicle stick headframe-building competition.

Honorary chair Dick Destefano, executive director of the Sudbury Area Mining Service and Supply Association (SAMSSA), called this a transitional year for the event, noting that there will be a greater emphasis on innovation and technology.

“Sudbury Mining Week is putting particular focus on mining and techology to reflect rapid growth and innovation in the mines and minerals sector, and that includes ground-breaking research taking place right here in our own backyard,” he said in his chair's address.

Noting the increase in research agencies, innovation and technology centres, educational institutions and companies' innovation, Destefano said Sudbury has “evolved into one of the world's premier hubs for the industry and technology.”
