Stantec has donated $50,000 to the Fondation du Collège Boréal, which supports scholarships for students.
The foundation for the Sudbury-based college is seeking to raise $5 million through its Leading Us to Prosperity campaign during the 2011-2012 school year. A total of $2.5 million has already been raised.
“This generous donation from Stantec significantly endows the scholarship fund for our students located across the vast territory served by our seven campuses. Our students will be the first to directly benefit from it,” college president Denis Hubert-Dutrisac said in a news release. “We greatly appreciate this gesture from Stantec that will kick start the year and provide a good boost to the campaign in 2012.”
Mike Mayhew, Stantec’s mining practice leader and director for global business services, stressed the importance of developing a qualified and bilingual workforce.
“For Stantec, contributing to the foundation’s scholarship fund is a direct way of sustaining and enriching the development of future workers in the local and regional industry,” said Mayhew, who also serves as campaign chair of the Fondation du Collège Boréal. “We are thus proud to support postsecondary education in French for our local youth.”
This year, the Fondation du Collège Boréal will offer, on average, more than 2,000 scholarships to its students, representing almost $1.4 million for 2011-2012. To date, the foundation’s capital fund has surpassed the $10-million mark.
