A Toronto solar company is setting up operations in Sudbury to offer “turnkey” solar power solutions for Northern Ontario clients.

Grasshopper Solar announced in late August it will be breaking ground in the Sudbury suburb of Copper Cliff to install the first ground-mounted solar power system in the area.

The company is taking advantage of the province's MicroFIT program designed to stimulate the development of small scale renewable energy with a special feed-in tariff rate for small solar projects.

“After evaluating multiple cities, Sudbury became the logical choice based on its central location, highly skilled workforce, and its legacy and commitment to be more environmentally conscious,” said Mike Gow, the company's vice-president of business development, in an Aug. 25 press release.

The company looks to create 10 jobs in the Sudbury area as they broaden their expansion into Northern Ontario with residential, commercial, institutional, industrial and rural systems.
