Local science and technology leaders were recently recognized by the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre.
The fifth annual SSMARt (Sault Ste. Marie and Region) Innovation Awards were held at the Grand Theatre, June 17.
Company of the Year honours went to Superior Energy Solutions and Don Curry for their work installing commercial and residential solar projects under the province's microFIT contract. The company has more than one megawatt's worth of projects in the next year.
Dr. Basil Arif, a researcher at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre, took home the Innovation Leader of the Year Award for his research group's development of a virus for control of the spruce budworm that resulted in two worldwide generic patents.
Dr. Barry Lyons of the Canadian Forest Service and his team were acknowledged for their sampling and detection methods of the highly destructive emerald ash borer pest.
