The fifth annual SSMARt (Sault Ste. Marie and Region) Innovation Awards were held at the Grand Theatre, June 17.

Dr. Basil Arif, a researcher at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre, took home the Innovation Leader of the Year Award for his research group's development of a virus for control of the spruce budworm that resulted in two worldwide generic patents.
Dr. Barry Lyons of the Canadian Forest Service and his team were acknowledged for their sampling and detection methods of the highly destructive emerald ash borer pest.
