SIS Manufacturing of Sault Ste. Marie is undergoing a $2.4-million expansion, thanks in part to $1 million in funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC).
SIS has used the funding—a $500,000 loan and a $500,000 grant—to construct a 36,000-square-foot building for the manufacturing of structural steel components for locomotive trains. Funding will additionally be used towards equipment upgrades, including two 25-tonne cranes, sub arc welding machines, a shot blast horizontal plate machine and a new AKS Robohead machine.
“The province’s NOHFC program is very helpful for northern businesses such as SIS Manufacturing because it has given us the ability to make significant upgrades to our infrastructure and equipment so we can compete for contracts that will create local jobs and contribute to Sault Ste. Marie’s economy,” said Tony Porco, president of SIS Manufacturing, in a news release.
“The NOHFC is important for businesses of all sizes in Northern Ontario and we are pleased to have been approved for a program that will have economic benefits for our community and the Algoma region.”
The upgrades at SIS Manufacturing are expected to create up to 50 full-time jobs.
