The Laurentian University School of Architecture has received a $100,000 donation towards the establishment of scholarships for future architecture students.
Blaine Nicholls, chair of the steering committee that formed in 2007 to champion the idea of an architecture school, and his wife Lise made the donation in memory of Nicholls’ mother, who left him the inheritance.
“I was saving this money for something special, and as the architecture project became more real, I realized that this was the special kind of project she would have wanted to support,” Nicholls said in a news release.
Nicholls was a partner with Sudbury architecture firm Nicholls Yallowega and Bélanger until his retirement five years ago, and was recently honoured with the Community Builders Award of Excellence in economic development for his work advocating for the school.
His donation comes following recent donations by TD Insurance Meloche Monnex, which provided $100,000, and Downtown Sudbury, which donated $50,000.
The donations will go towards scholarships, bursaries, state-of-the-art computer software and resources needed for the program’s Community Design/Build projects.
“We very much appreciate all of these signals of support for the Laurentian School of Architecture,” school director Terrence Galvin said in the release. “Every gift will help to equip and educate the next generation of architects.”
