Two enterprises in Sault Ste. Marie are the recipients of more than $234,000 from the federal government to support business growth and innovation initiatives in Northern Ontario.
The Ontario Wood Products Export Association will use $206,615 to help prepare wood products firms in Northern Ontario for export opportunities and promote companies in targeted international markets. The three-year initiative will help improve the competitiveness of the sector and increase sales.
Algoma University will use $27,500 to hire a youth intern to “help refine and conduct prototype testing of brain computer interface technology that among other things would enable users to communicate their thoughts via computer.”
"The goal of today's targeted investments is to enhance the competitiveness of the wood products sector in Northern Ontario and create commercial opportunities," MP Bryan Hayes said in a news release. "By helping local companies take advantage of export markets and by supporting local applied research and development efforts, our government is helping create jobs."
The funding comes from FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
