Phase two of Sault College's campus rebuild is getting underway with the replacement of the student centre.

The current student centre, The Outback, will be demolished to make way for a 45,000-square-foot health and wellness centre. Ellis Don was awarded the contract for the work, and construction is estimated to be complete by the spring of 2013.

“The new Sault College Student Health and Wellness Centre is a much-needed facility on campus that will serve as an effective training and educational resource,” college president Ron Common said in a news release. “As we say goodbye to The Outback and the many cherished memories experienced there by our students, alumni and staff, we welcome the new state-of-the-art centre to campus.”

The new centre will incorporate academic labs, fitness rooms and a gymnasium, Common added. The centre will “address student needs and accommodate growth in varsity sports and academic programming, as well as promote a healthier lifestyle for students,” he said.

The project is part of an overall $100-million project to renovate the college's aging buildings, most of which have not been updated since the 1970s.

Funding for the project is comprised of $4 million from the province, $3 million from student fees and $1 million from the city, with the rest to be contributed by the college.
