Sault College is launching a series of tuition-free training opportunities in the areas of renewable energy and green construction techniques, construction carpentry techniques and basic green construction and retrofitting skills.
The programming is being offered through the Northern Training Partnership Fund, which assists Ontario workers in developing workplace skills and securing sustainable employment in resource-related sectors. Funding for the programs was granted in February.
“The Northern Training Partnership Fund will help Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Northern Ontario get the training they need to benefit from new resource development opportunities in the renewable energy and green construction sectors,” Ted Newberry, continuing education manager, said in a news release. “Eligible students receive tuition, books, supplies and construction equipment fully funded throughout the duration of the program.”
Garden River First Nation will host the renewable energy and green construction techniques, while Batchewana First Nation and M’Chigeeng First Nation will host construction carpentry techniques. Each community will also host the basic green construction and retrofitting skills program, commencing in mid-September. All programs are open to both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students over the age of 18 in any of the communities.
The programs consist of 38 weeks of learning, running from June 25 to March 22, for which students will earn an Ontario College certificate. All three programs will contain an eight-week employability skills and academic preparation study that includes introductory courses in communications, math, computers, training in first aid, CPR and WHMIS, and renewable energy concepts.
Following completion of any of these programs, two staff job developers will assist students in gaining employment.
