Sault College has turned the sod for construction of a new $25-million academic wing.
The Sault Ste. Marie campus is accommodating its growing enrolment with the new three-story, 75,000-square-foot addition. The building will provide new classroom space, a lecture hall and a reconfigured main entrance.
Funding for the project came through Ottawa's Knowledge Infrastructure Program and was outlined in the 2009 Ontario government budget.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by John Milloy, Ontario's Minister of Colleges, Training and Universities.
Sault College president Ron Common said the modern academic wing will benefit all students and will consist of flexible learning spaces to handle student growth. The college's enrolment is experiencing phenomenal growth with total registrations up more than 23 per cent, including a 35 per cent increase in first-year registration making Sault College the fastest growing college in the province.
“At Sault College we have experienced significant growth this year in our enrolment and we look forward to continued growth and success as a result of this redevelopment of our campus,” said Common.
