Union Gas said construction is underway on the second phase of a pipeline project to deliver natural gas service to the Red Lake area.
The first phase, which began last year, was to serve Goldcorp's mine complex.
“The Municipality of Red Lake was one of the largest communities in Ontario that was not served by natural gas,” said Brian Anderson, Red Lake's CAO in a June 11 release. “The availability of affordable natural gas presents an opportunity to significantly reduce energy costs for local citizens and businesses, and drive economic development and job creation.”
Link Line is handling the construction.
Union Gas is planning a series of area open houses this summer.
“These sessions will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about Union Gas and obtain information about the process of applying for gas service,” said Ian Ross, the northwestern Ontario district manager for Union Gas.
The two-stage project was approved by the Ontario Energy Board in July 2011.
