Thunder Bay International Airport posted a record year in passenger traffic in 2011.

In a Jan. 10 release, the airport said 719,500 passengers passed through the northwestern Ontario city's terminal, a four per cent increase over the 2010 total of 691,826.

Airport president and CEO Scott McFadden chalks up the numbers to a strong regional economic activity, and new and existing carriers introducing or adding flights or larger aircraft, especially between Thunder Bay and Toronto.

McFadden said 2012 is shaping up nicely with direct, non-stop flights by WestJet, Air Transat and Sun Wing Vacations to various Caribbean destinations and by Porter Airlines to Mount Tremblant and Myrtle Beach.
