Personal bankruptcies are up more than 50 per cent across Sudbury and Thunder Bay in the first nine months of 2009 over the same period last year, according to a third-quarter 2009 report published by federal government.
The report, Insolvency Statistics in Canada, indicates 999 personal bankruptcies were seen in Sudbury through to the end of September, up 50.7 per cent from 663 the year before. In Thunder Bay, the number rose 50.3 per cent from 394 to 592.
Business insolvencies fared better in both cities, however, with Sudbury seeing a 3.8 per cent drop, and Thunder Bay seeing a 21.7 per cent drop.
