Participants sought for feasibility study of training consortium

The Algoma Workforce Investment Committee (AWIC) is seeking employers in the industrial, manufacturing and construction sectors to participate in a feasibility study that would determine the viability of an Algoma Training Consortium.

The consortium would be an attempt to address “an ongoing challenge to update the workforce skills required to sustain and grow the industrial, manufacturing and construction sectors in the region,” according to a news release.

The AWIC is seeking employers in the industrial, manufacturing or construction sectors who are interested in participating in the study, which must be completed by April 2012.

“Project coordinators will work together with regional employers to identify the training requirements needed to upgrade the skills of the current and future workforce, such as ongoing health and safety requirements, technical skills, upgrading of essential skills and leadership development,” the release said.

“They will also identify the training strategies that are best suited to the employers' economic and production circumstances. All of the information gathered will then be used to determine regional training development priorities and delivery strategies.”

The project is being undertaken by the AWIC, in partnership with Sault College and with funding from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Should the consortium go ahead, it would provide a shared training resource that would address employers' workforce development skills needs with cost-effective and innovative training solutions in Algoma.
