Plans to almost double the generating capacity at four provincial hydroelectric generating stations on the Lower Mattagami River will be finalized later this year followed by a comprehensive environmental assessment, said Ontario Power Generation (OPG).

The provincial utility released an updated report of its ongoing generation development projects that are part of its second quarter financial statements, released Aug. 14.

The four stations on the Lower Mattagami, near James Bay, will increase in generating capacity from 483 megawatts to 933 megawatts.
A study report will be released for public comment in the third quarter of this year.

OPG is negotiating with area First Nations to resolve grievances attributed to the construction and operation of these facilities. The new agreement will provide the First Nations with an ability to purchase up to 25 per cent equity interest in the project.

In May, OPG has also completed $300 million in financing for its Upper Mattagami and Hound Chute projects. In July, the utility entered into a partnership arrangement of its Lac Seul generating station with the Lac Seul First Nation, northwest of Sioux Lookout in northwestern Ontario. The band now has a 25 per cent stake in the 12.5 megawatt station.
